Paper and cardboard recycling is central to the work done by the internationally operating Newark Group based in New Jersey, USA. With the introduction of a document management solution at two of their locations in Spain, the company has not only boosted efficiencies in its processes, but is also making the most of technology to underline its commitment to using paper in an environmentally conscious way.

At Newarkfs paper mills in San Andres, Spain, 93 percent of the raw materials needed to produce paper rolls come from recycled material. That number jumps to 97 percent at Videcart S.A., the companyfs subsidiary in Pamplona for the production of cardboard and paper sales and transportation packaging, for example, for fruit and vegetable products, which can be reused and is biodegradable.
Itfs a fact that a high volume of paper in administrative business processes is inefficient. To address this, the Newark Group moved to digitize all central business processes at these two locations. Particularly in accounting, order processing and production, tons of documents had accumulated over time. One employee was singularly dedicated to managing the central paper archive. "Not only was searching for certain documents increasingly time consuming, but the physical exchange of documents between San Andres, where accounting is located, and Pamplona, where order processing is controlled, proved more and more difficult. Occasionally, documents were lost en route or untraceable, often because of misfiling," explains Alberto Gorostizu, European IT Infrastructure Manager at Newark Group International in Pamplona. By introducing an electronic document management system, they were looking to eliminate all of these issues and lay the foundation for savvy digital workflows.
